“No regrets” sings Robbie Williams, “They don’t work, No regrets, they only hurt”.

Good advice – there’s no point bringing up the past. But my problem is, there’s loads of things I regret – things I’ve said, things I’ve done, things I’ve thought.  There are people I can’t look in the eye, places I can’t pass without a shudder, things I can’t let go of. 

Is it really possible to be happy forever with no regrets? Can I be free from the guilt?

The Bible’s answer is “Yes!”. To understand it we have to know 3 things:

1)      Where does happiness come from?

Real happiness is found not in things like money or possessions, or in other people.  It’s not even found in doing good things.  Real happiness is found in knowing and loving the God who made me.

There is a place of everlasting happiness, it’s called Heaven.

2)      Where do regrets come from?

The fact that we have regrets is to do with a much deeper problem.  We haven’t looked for happiness in God, but in things.  The Bible calls this sin, and it is sin that messes up my life, and that’s why we have so many regrets.  Not only that – because we have sinned, we are shut out of heaven, and deserve to go to a place of everlasting regret: hell, where God punishes sin forever.

3)      Where is sin dealt with?

For me to have no regrets, I need to get rid of my sin.  But there’s nothing I can do to get rid of it. The amazing news is, God sent His Son Jesus to live a sinless life with no regrets, to die on the cross to take the punishment that I deserve for sin, and to rise again.  The only people who are happy forever with no regrets are Christians – people who have turned from sin, trusted Jesus to get rid of it, and now live for Him.  This is what it means to be “washed in the blood of the Lamb” (Revelation 7v14-17) – to be scrubbed clean of sin, regrets and guilt by Jesus’ death for us.

Jesus Christ is the only person who can make you happy forever with no regrets.
